4300 Chestnut Street, University City, Philadelphia

The Netherlands

Commanding an entire city block between 43rd and 44th Streets, The Netherlands is a 1907 landmark whose brick-and-limestone façade and grand interior details speak to the early golden age of apartment living in Philadelphia. Originally designed by architect William Bull, the building’s historic character—marble wainscoting, ornamental moldings, and mosaic floors—has been thoughtfully revived through a comprehensive historic renovation, reintroducing the elegance of the original fabric while delivering modern comfort and performance. Today, 109 redesigned residences pair white-oak flooring, stone countertops, and in-unit laundry with restored common spaces that honor the past. Set in the heart of University City, just blocks from UPenn, Drexel, and the region’s premier research and medical institutions, The Netherlands stands as a refined union of heritage and contemporary urban living.
